Smoking and other drugs
During pregnancy it is important to be aware that all of the substances you put into your body has the potential to harm your unborn baby. These include:
Tobacco
Smoking or exposure to second-hand smoke during pregnancy can cause your baby to be born underweight and has also been linked to miscarriage, prematurity, impaired heart rate and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). See: Pregnancy and smoking (external link) and Smoke Free Baby (external link)
Medicines
Including some prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines and complementary medicines such as herbal remedies or nutrition supplements. It is important to speak to your health care provider to check the safety of all medications, supplements and/or remedies during pregnancy. - Illicit use of prescription drugs – such as benzodiazepines or morphin
- Illegal drugs – such as cannabis, heroin, cocaine or amphetamines
- Substances used as drugs – such as inhalants, glues or aerosols
