Ngala is fortunate to have received $120,000 from the Australian Children’s Trust. This funding will be used to develop resources to support Ngala’s Indigenous Parenting and Children’s Programs, focusing on the needs of Aboriginal families and the development of tailored indigenous ‘Building Brains’ DVD resources.

The first quarter of 2011 marked phase one of the ‘Aboriginal Building Brains’ project. A major milestone was the appointment of Child Health Nurse Kim Wedge as Project Leader and Mary Brennan, Aboriginal Artist and community worker, as Project Support Officer.

A key part of developing resources for Aboriginal people is gaining community support and input as well as developing rapport with the health, education, media and community networks. Kim and Mary have consulted with interested groups and organisations, establishing links and contacts in a variety of networks. This relationship building has increased their knowledge of the services and resources currently available for Aboriginal people within the metropolitan area and beyond.

Kim and Mary will continue this work in consultation with the community and service providers to identify resource gaps for Aboriginal parents, looking carefully at the ‘big picture’ and how the final product may look.
