An article appeard in CRC Network News in May 2012 on Ngala's work with local CRCs in the wheatbelt to deliver parenting education workshops to the rual community.

Raising a child is an exciting and precious time, however even for the most experienced parent it can also be very challenging. With so many opinions and advice about what are the ‘right and wrong’ methods to raise a child, parents can be left feeling overwhelmed and confused.

To help overcome some of these challenges, a number of CRCs have partnered with parenting experts Ngala and Child Health Services to provide regional families with opportunities to attend free Parent Education Workshops.

Through the CRCs, Ngala are providing educational programs for parents, grandparents and carers of children from 0 to 6 years of age. These workshops explore a number of strategies for parents and discuss a range of techniques that can be used in difficult situations. Lake Grace CRC Manager Suzanne Reeves said the response to workshops had been very encouraging with parents and carers expressing their appreciation for learning new parenting skills and sharing their personal experiences.

“It was wonderful to have the opportunity to hold this joint activity with Ngala and local child health nurse Libby Trevenen,” Ms Reeves said.

For community members that are unable to attend workshops, Ngala can provide one-on-one private and confidential consultations via the CRCs video-conferencing facilities.

Issues such as sleep and settling, breast feeding and nutrition, play and development, toddler behaviour and toileting challenges can be addressed.
