Introducing HIPPY:Home Interaction Program forParents and Youngsters |
![]() |
- HIPPY is a two year home-based program for preschool children (aged 3.5 to 5.5 years)
- HIPPY empowers parents to be their children’s first teacher
- HIPPY promotes school readiness and maximizes the chances of a successful early school experience.
- HIPPY fosters parent involvement in school and community life
- HIPPY is fun!
Essential features of
HIPPY:
- Home tutors
- Home visits
- Weekly activities
- Story books
- Group meetings for families
- A love of learning
- Fun!
HIPPY runs over two years, for 30 weeks each year (mostly during school terms). A home tutor makes fortnightly home visits to demonstrate the activities to parents through role-play. Parents work through activities with their children, spending 10-15 minutes per day, five days a week. Regular group meetings allow parents to discuss progress, provide support and encouragement to each other and take part in fun enrichment activities.
Ngala is licensed to operate the HIPPY program in Rockingham and Girrawheen in Western Australia.

Background
The HIPPY program has been operating internationally since 1975 , and in Australia since 1998. The Brotherhood of St Laurence holds the license with HIPPY International to run the program in Australia, and in turn, licences other not-for-profit organisations in different communities to run their own HIPPY projects. There are 9 established sites around Australia, with a further 50 new sites being rolled out over the next 3 years, funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.
Research from other HIPPY programs operating throughout Australia has shown improved communication between parents and children participating in the HIPPY program, and eagerness in children to learn new concepts.
